If you’ve been feeling confused and drained by someone in your life who seems perfect in public but is entirely different in private, you might be dealing with a covert narcissist. Their obsession with maintaining a favourable public image, is very confusing and often comes at the expense of those closest to them. In this post I have listed some real-life examples that might resonate with your experiences and help you understand what’s really going on.
1. The Public Hero, Private Tyrant
John is adored by his colleagues for his generosity and kindness. He frequently brings in treats for the office and volunteers for charity events. However, at home, his wife and children feel neglected and unimportant. He often misses family dinners and his children’s school events, citing his ‘busy schedule’ filled with altruistic activities that bolster his public persona. When his wife, Karen, voices her concerns, John accuses her of being ungrateful and selfish, punishing her with the silent treatment for days.
2. The Caring Neighbour, Neglectful Parent
Susan is known in her community for her helpful nature. She’s the first to offer support to neighbours in need, whether it’s running errands or providing a shoulder to cry on. Yet, her own family suffers from emotional neglect. Her teenage daughter, Lisa, feels invisible and unheard, often struggling alone with her problems because Susan’s empathy is reserved for those outside her home. When Lisa confronts her mother about her absence, Susan berates her for being inconsiderate of her efforts to help others, leaving Lisa feeling guilty and more isolated.
3. The Philanthropist with a Hidden Agenda
Michael proudly donates to various charities and ensures his contributions are well-publicised. He’s often seen at charity galas, rubbing shoulders with influential figures. However, his family struggles financially and emotionally, as he withholds support and affection, using his charitable deeds to mask his indifference towards their well-being. When his wife, Sarah, questions their financial strain, Michael belittles her concerns and threatens to cut off her access to money entirely, asserting his control over the household.
4. The Empathic Actor
Jessica is praised for her ability to connect with others, often seen comforting friends and acquaintances with seemingly genuine concern. In reality, she uses these moments to appear compassionate while remaining self-absorbed and emotionally detached. Her partner, Mark, knows this façade all too well as his own emotional needs are consistently ignored. When Mark attempts to discuss his feelings, Jessica dismisses him as being overly sensitive and accuses him of trying to sabotage her reputation, making him doubt his own perceptions.
5. Reputation Over Relationships
Tom is obsessed with his reputation. He meticulously curates his social media presence to project an image of a perfect, caring husband and father. Behind closed doors, however, he is critical and demanding, prioritising his image over meaningful relationships with his wife and children. His son, Ben, feels pressured to live up to his father’s expectations and maintain the family’s illusion of perfection. If Ben slips up, Tom responds with harsh punishments, such as taking away his privileges or publicly shaming him, reinforcing the need to keep up appearances at any cost.
6. The False Humility
Anna often downplays her achievements in public, appearing humble and modest. She strategically places herself in situations where she can receive praise and admiration without seeming to seek it out. At home, she demands constant validation and praise from her family, becoming resentful and punitive if they fail to acknowledge her superiority. Her daughter, Emma, who excels in school, is often discouraged from sharing her accomplishments to avoid overshadowing Anna, who then undermines Emma’s confidence by dismissing her achievements as insignificant.
7. The Enforcer of Illusions
David demands that his family uphold the image of a ‘perfect’ family. Any slip-ups or deviations from this narrative are met with harsh criticism and punishment. His daughter, Emily, learned to suppress her true self, fearing the repercussions of tarnishing the family’s carefully maintained façade. When Emily confides in a friend about her struggles, David finds out and punishes her by isolating her socially, restricting her activities, and reinforcing the notion that family issues should never be discussed outside the home.
8. The Keeper of Secrets
Maria insists on keeping family issues private, prioritising the family’s reputation over their well-being. She forces her children to lie about their family dynamics, creating a culture of secrecy and fear. Her son, Alex, struggles with anxiety, knowing he must protect the family’s image at all costs. When Alex accidentally reveals a family conflict to a teacher, Maria berates him for hours, stripping him of his few social privileges and instilling a deep fear of ever betraying the family again.
9. The Kind Persona, Unkind Reality
Ryan is admired for his public acts of kindness. He’s always the first to help a stranger or support a cause. However, his kindness doesn’t extend to his family. His wife, Laura, often feels emotionally abandoned, as Ryan’s public persona takes precedence over genuine acts of kindness at home. When Laura expresses her feelings of neglect, Ryan accuses her of being jealous of his good deeds and punishes her by withdrawing even further, leaving her feeling isolated and resentful.
These examples illustrate the stark contrast between the covert narcissist’s public and private behaviours, highlighting the emotional and psychological toll on their family members. Recognising these patterns can be the first step towards understanding and addressing the impact of covert narcissism on family dynamics.
If these scenarios resonate with you, it’s important to seek support and take steps towards reclaiming your emotional well-being.
